UN health agency panel sees 'very low' risk of Zika spread from Olympics
14 June 2016 – An expert panel of the World Health Organization (是谁) today concluded that while the Zika病毒 和 its associated disorders continue to be a public health emergency of international concern, there is a “very low” risk of further international spread of the virus as a result of the upcoming Olympic Games.
At the third meeting today of the Emergency Committee convened under the International Health Regulations regarding microcephaly, other neurological disorders 和 the Zika病毒, the Committee provided views to Dr. 陈冯富珍博士, 卫生组织总干事, on whether the issue continued to constitute a public health emergency of international concern.
The Committee was also tasked with considering the potential risks of Zika transmission for mass gatherings, including the Olympic 和 Paralympic Games scheduled for August 和 September, respectively, 在里约热内卢的里约热内卢, 巴西.
“Focusing on the potential risks associated with the Olympic 和 Paralympic Games, the Committee reviewed information provided by 巴西 和 advisors specializing in arboviruses, the international spread of infectious diseases, travel医学, 大众集会和生物伦理学,“世界卫生组织 said 在新闻稿中.
“The Committee concluded that there is a very low risk of further international spread of Zika病毒 as a result of the Olympic 和 Paralympic Games, as 巴西 will be hosting the Games during the 巴西ian winter when the intensity of autochthonous transmission of arboviruses, 如 登革热 和寨卡病毒, will be minimal 和 is intensifying vector-control measures in 和 around the venues for the Games, which should further reduce the risk of transmission,“谁添加了.
The Committee was also briefed on the implementation of the temporary recommendations issued by the Director-General on 8 March 和 updated on the epidemiology 和 association of Zika病毒 infection, microcephaly 和 Guillain-Barré Syndrome since that time
Advisors to the Committee provided further information on the potential risks of Zika病毒 transmission associated with mass gatherings 和 the upcoming Olympic 和 Paralympic Games, 和 the Committee thoroughly reviewed the range of public perspectives, opinions 和 concerns that have recently been aired on the subject, 根据世界卫生组织.
The Executive Committee concurred with the international scientific consensus, 自从它最后一次到达, that Zika病毒 is a cause of microcephaly 和 Guillain-Barré Syndrome, 和, consequently, that Zika病毒 infection 和 its associated congenital 和 other neurological disorders is a public health emergency of international concern.
The Committee noted that mass gatherings, 如 the Olympic 和 Paralympic Games, can bring together substantial numbers of susceptible individuals, 和 can pose a risk to the individuals themselves, can result in the amplification of transmission 和 can, potentially, contribute to the international spread of a communicable disease depending on its epidemiology, the risk factors present 和 the mitigation strategies that are in place.
In the context of the Zika病毒, the Committee noted that the individual risks in areas of transmission are the same whether or not a mass gathering is conducted, 和 can be minimized by good public health measures.
In addition, at the meeting the Committee reaffirmed 和 updated its advice to the Director-General on the prevention of infection in international travellers.
The advice includes that pregnant women should be advised not to travel to areas of ongoing Zika病毒 outbreaks; pregnant women whose sexual partners live in or travel to areas with Zika病毒 outbreaks should ensure safe sexual practices or abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy; 和 travellers to areas with Zika病毒 outbreaks should be provided with up-to-date advice on potential risks 和 appropriate measures to reduce the possibility of exposure through mosquito bites 和 sexual transmission 和, 在return, should take appropriate measures, including practicing safer sex, to reduce the risk of onward transmission.
The Committee reaffirmed its previous advice that there should be no general restrictions on travel 和 trade with countries, areas 和/or territories with Zika病毒 transmission, including the cities in 巴西 that will be hosting the Olympic 和 Paralympic Games.
Based on the Executive Committee's advice, the Director-General declared the continuation of the public health emergency of international concern.
